Chris….

When you arrive at a brand new location that you’ve never seen or photographed, what is the first thing you do when thinking about creating an image?
I usually like to do as much research as possible so I’m not totally overwhelmed when i get there.. often times it takes me a bit of time to get the creative juices flowing.. as I usually want to just sit and soak it all in. Often I live by that mantra the more you know the less you need and that goes along way when being creative in a space.”

What do you photograph when there isn’t an incredible sunrise or a super colorful cloudy sunset?

I usually look for canyons or water that are good to shoot in shad. I ind that often it the sky isn’t great you can focus on more detail or subject matter allowing it to fill the frame. Certain things look good in any light.”

What do you like best about photographing Navajoland?
Its the sense of place.. it feels sacred in more ways than one and I feel a certain reverence for it that I like to try and bring out in my images. I guess its a place that I feel special and doesnt feel like Disneyland in my eyes.”

What’s the best tool/gadget/app for your iPhone for photography?
Photo Pills for sure!”

IF you were to visit Navajoland again, where would you want to spend more time at?
“I want to go to Canyon De Chelly really bad .”

When you went to Navajoland for your first time, what was your favorite memory or image?
went with my grandpa as a kid.. he took me across New Mexico and Utah.. I remember going to Shiprock and seeing it for the first time. It was surreal.. Like nothing I had seen before and he told me the stories about it.. they always stuck with me. I didn’t shoot any photos.. but I had an image in my head.”
